Become a Facilitator Volunteer

Help children who are grieving know they aren’t alone.

The Warm Place Potluck

Description

You’ll help provide a safe, nurturing space for children to constructively express feelings of grief after the death of a loved one.

Volunteer facilitators act as leaders in our grief support groups. Group activities might include drawing, painting, journaling, making crafts, playing games and sharing thoughts or feelings.

Responsibilities

  • Agree to one-year commitment.
  • Honor statement of confidentiality.
  • Facilitate discussion and activities during group.
  • Cooperate with staff, monitor, and fellow facilitators.
  • Full participation in pre-and post-sessions.
  • Provide a dish for the potluck dinner.
  • Assist in clean-up after group.
  • Provide feedback on appropriate activities for next session.
  • Report concerns to Group Monitor immediately.
  • Honor facilitator guidelines.

Qualifications

  • At least 18 years old.
  • Commitment to The WARM Place’s mission and genuine care for children.
  • Agree to criminal background check.
  • Be able to sit on a cushion on the floor.
  • Work as a team member.

Supervision

You will report to the Volunteer Coordinator and The WARM Place staff for questions, and supervision. We’ll walk you through everything you need to know on your first night volunteering.

Time Commitment

Facilitators donate 4 hours to their assigned group on a bi-weekly basis, for 8 hours total per month.

Expectations for each group:

  • Pre-K: Wednesdays 11:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. for ten weeks in the fall and spring.
  • Children’s Groups: 5:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. every other week on a designated night (Monday-Thursday).
  • Young Adults: Wednesdays 7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. for eight weeks in the fall, spring, and summer.

Training

We want our Group Facilitator volunteers to be well-equipped to lead peer support groups confidently. Our initial training requires around 16 hours, with ongoing education in pre- and post-sessions. In training, we’ll cover Grief 101, self-care, death loss stories, religion and spiritual issues, funeral traditions, and more.
