Finding Glimmers of Dad This Father’s Day

Over the years, we have asked our families to share how they honor their loved ones and remember them with care and intention. Families have shared that when special days or occasions come up, it can feel overwhelming. Many families have shared it is important to acknowledge that each family member may have very different ideas about how they want to celebrate or honor their special person.

Father’s Day is a time we honor the fathers and father figures in our lives. Families have shared this day may look different from year to year and acknowledge that everyone’s grief is unique. Some helpful words from our families over the years include:

Recently, we were talking about this idea of glimmers with our WARM Place families. A glimmer is a micro-moment when your body feels calm, connected, or hopeful. It can be something small like seeing a butterfly land near you or the way the light hits your window. Glimmers can remind us that we are okay, help regulate our nervous system, decrease stress, and build a sense of inner safety as well. Being present in the moment and truly breathing it in can even help increase joy.

As we approach Father’s Day, find your glimmers and try to take it all in. Be mindful of all five senses and notice how your body feels in that moment. Some suggest writing it down or sharing with others can help you return to those moments. Remembering Dad in the smell of his favorite cologne, seeing a familiar smile of a family member, hearing the laugh of someone you love, the taste of his favorite food, or the warmth of a hug.
