Some people discover The WARM Place through a personal connection, while others are inspired by the opportunity to give back. For board member and dedicated supporter Tim Thompson, the connection runs much deeper. What began as an introduction to the organization quickly became a meaningful commitment of time, talent, and resources. In this special spotlight, he shares what inspires his involvement, the moments that have stayed with him, and why the mission continues to hold a special place in his heart.
What brought you to The WARM Place? Do you have a personal grief story that connects you to the mission?

Grief has unfortunately been a part of my life. I lost my dad when I was 15, and my mom about 15 years later. Along the way, I’ve also lost my best friend and two close friends. When my dad passed away, our family went to see a counselor — my mom, my two brothers, and me — once. It wasn’t the right fit, and we never went back. The WARM Place would have been a completely different story. Being around other kids my age going through the same thing, asking the same questions I had — that would have meant everything. It was my best friend’s wife who eventually pointed me toward The WARM Place. The first time I walked those halls, it hit me hard — the compassion, the care, the thoughtfulness in every corner. I felt it immediately. That’s what drew me in.
In addition to volunteering on The WARM Place board, you are also a donor and support our fundraising events. What is it that makes you feel compelled to give not only of your time but financially as well?
My only regret is not having more time and money to give — I mean that. Once you’ve seen what grief does to a family up close, and once you’ve walked those halls and felt what the staff and volunteers pours into that place every day, giving back doesn’t feel optional. I’m grateful, humbled, and honestly in awe of this organization. The WARM Place fills a need I understand personally. It’s hard to walk away from that and not want to do more.

What is one of your favorite WARM Place moments or events from your time on the board?
The moments that stick with me most are actually the hardest ones. I’ve sat next to my best friend’s widow and a lifelong friend’s widow at the Cool Nights Gala. Watching them find connection, start to heal, and keep going while raising their kids — it’s heavy. But those connections are real, and knowing this place helped them get there means everything to me. I won’t forget those moments.
What is a fun fact about you that most people, including your fellow board members, might not know?
During the week I’m in a suit and tie. Come the weekend, it’s jeans, boots, and a hat. I spend my weekends at the ranch feeding cattle, horses, clearing pastures, and fixing whatever decided to break that week. People who only know me from work are usually pretty caught off guard by that one.

What would you say to someone who is considering volunteering their time, in any capacity, to The WARM Place mission?
Just do it. And hold on tight once you do. The people, the purpose, the work — there’s nothing quite like it. My hat’s off to every volunteer and staff member who gives their time to this mission. You won’t regret it.
