Volunteer Spotlight: Brent Hradek

Next up in our Volunteer Spotlight series is Brent Hradek, a dedicated volunteer whose heart for service is rooted in both personal experience and a deep commitment to others. Brent brings warmth, empathy, and a great sense of humor to everything he does. When he’s not volunteering, you might find him adding to his massive baseball card collection or traveling the country to visit SEC football stadiums. Since joining The WARM Place in 2022, Brent has made a meaningful impact by simply showing up, listening, and creating space for kids to feel seen, heard, and supported. Read more about Brent and how he gets connected to The WARM Place.
Tell us about yourself!

I’ve been married to my wife, Leslie, for 33 years. She has recently retired, so I’m working on recruiting a new WARM Place volunteer! We have one child, Matthew, who is living in California. Most of my hobbies involve sports. I have about 300,000 baseball cards and my best friend and I are also doing an annual tour of all the SEC football stadiums. We have hit 7 of 16 so far. Outside of volunteering at TWP, I have been on 7 mission trips to Sierra Leone, Africa. I’m also working with our hospital’s finance manager on computer training and financial reporting.

When did you first learn about TWP and what brought you here?

My brother died when I was 7, so I’ve always been very empathetic to kids in that situation. I had never heard of TWP until a friend started volunteering there. She knew my story and suggested I come. To tell the truth, it sounded like something I would like to do, but I sat on it for a few months until she followed up with a note about upcoming facilitator training. Once I came, I was hooked. I have been volunteering since February 2022.

What is your favorite thing about volunteering with TWP?

Nights when one of our kids suddenly share something they had previously held inside are amazing!

What’s been one of your most memorable moments volunteering at TWP?

Honestly, anytime a kid shows they trust us enough to share what’s going on inside is pretty special. Especially at Camp Remember Me, watching the kids overcome their fears by climbing, walking tightropes, and zip lining!

What would you say to someone who is thinking about volunteering at TWP?

The job description is pretty easy: just show up regularly and listen. The rewards for all of us are amazing!
